Why am i going to Vietnam? What is 'Indev'?

Hi there. Welcome back!

I hope you have all had a great week, I sure have. I have thoroughly enjoyed Reading week, which is a random break in February where we get a week off to relax and catch up on our school work, and I did exactly that (ahem). I thought today would be a good day to tell you about the purpose of this blog. Lets talk about why I am going to Vietnam; but first I have to tell you what 'Indev' is. International Development (Indev) is a multidisciplinary program run by the School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development at the University of Waterloo(UW); where I have been learning about the causes for global poverty, environmental degradation, and  the dominant socio-economic systems in the world. Here at UW I haven't just learned about the issues, but have also learned the tools to address these issues. Coming up on my fourth year here (WOW the years went by fast) I have an eight month field placement with the Dariu Foundation in Ho Chi Minh City, to put all that I have learned into practice. To put this into further context, I have never been to Vietnam before, nor do I know anyone who is living there right now. Though I am flipping between extreme excitement and anxiety, I am sure it will be an AWESOME experience. The next six months are going to go by so fast, but not nearly as fast as my eight months in Vietnam.

Sadly, due to internet censorship laws in Vietnam, I would not be able to access Blogspot from there. I am looking into other blogging sites to continue this blog. I will miss this platform dearly.

Welcome to my Blog!

Hello there friends and friends to be! Shagotom, Mingalaba, Welcome. I have started this blog to document and communicate with you, my upcoming trip to Vietnam. Come September, I will be working with The Dariu Foundation in Ho Chi Minh city for eight months; and I can't wait! The thrill of going to a new country, experiencing a new culture and, working for a cause near and dear to me has me filled to the brim with bubbling bubbles of excitement.
The last three days, here at the University of Waterloo, we have had beautiful sunshine, and spring-esque weather. Despite feeling a nagging guilt in the back of my mind about how winter SHOULDN'T be like this, it has definitely had an uplifting effect on me. What better time to start a blog! :) I am looking forward to further develop this blog and stay in touch with you over the next year as i go through the ups and downs of living and working in a new country, in a new job.

See you later, Alligator
and remember your day is only as good, or as bad as you allow yourself to make it. (unless you are caught in a negative cycle of poverty)
